Although previous generations of the 7 have been largely conservative and capable of living up to the reflected glory image, BMW's current design stance, penned by North American stylist, Chris Bangle, is more avant-garde. As a result, the 7 Series has been roundly criticised for its outline and overtly stylish details and has struggled to build sales in the UK Yet, it remains an excellent driver's car, boasting some excellent engines.

The luxury specification meets the highest modern standards. Standard models are equipped with electrically adjsutable front seats, leather upholstery, electric heated door mirrors, electric windows, dual-zone climate control, atuo-dipping rear view mirror, 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlamps with washers, cruise control, multi-function controls on the steering wheel, electric steering column adjustment with memory and automatic wipers and headlights. SE versions add 18-inch wheels and satellite navigation; Sport versions have 19-inch wheels and sports seats and steering wheel. All versions feature BMW's i-Drive computer ssytem for controlling feautres such as ventilation, audio, communications and, where fitted, navigation. Long wheelbase versions are available on all models except the 730d.
