Fiat Panda Hatchback Review
The Panda was the 2004 European Car of the Year and, for a change, is a car that deserved to win the title. This quirky little Italian five-door is pleasing to look and, thanks to a shape that's virtually a cube, it's also immensely practical and space-efficient. The cabin architecture is as accomplished as a much larger car's, and although the dashboard plastics feel a bit low-rent, they£re offset by low showroom prices: in sum, a hit.

Fiat starts the Panda range with Active trim, available only with the 1.1. This brings a radio-cassette and front electric windows. Pay another £700 for Dynamic trim and gain the larger 1.2-litre engine, a power outlet, a radio-CD player, a remote facility on the central locking and some cosmetic bits and pieces. A further £550 brings three choices: Panda Aircon has air-conditioning and roof bars; Panda SkyDome has a huge electric sunroof, front foglights and roofbars; Panda Sound has roofbars, foglights, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a radio-CD with sub-woofer. Another £700 delivers the flagship Panda Eleganza which carries alloy wheels, roofbars, a radio-CD player and climate control. The £7,895 Panda diesel has electric front windows, remote central locking, radio-CD and twin airbags. The £9,195 Panda 4x4 comes with all that plus dual-purpose tyres on alloy wheels, front foglights, height adjustment on the driver's seat and, obviously, four-wheel drive.
