Honda Civic Saloon Review
Dependability is the Honda byword, but in the past has also implied dullness to too many potential customers for Honda's liking, which is why its designers were given free rein to shake up the company's top-selling UK model. The result: easily the most striking mainstream hatchback on the market. Mechanically, though, the new Civic is not as radical as its appearance and Wurlitzer organ-style dashboard would suggest, so owners who crave Honda's legendary reliability needn't lose sleep. Whether or not such revolutionary lines stay fresh or date horribly is another matter.

The range starts with S trim, which must surely stand for Spartan, because the only notable toys are four electric windows and a front centre armrest. SE trim adds a rear parcel shelf, active head restraints, adaptable boot storage with lid, refrigeration in the glove box, climate control, a four-speaker radio-CD player with controls on the steering wheel, and 16-inch alloy wheels on the 1.8 and 2.2D. Sport trim adds 17-inch alloys and xenon headlights with washers. ES trim reverts to 16-inch alloys and loses the premium headlights and washers, but gains cruise control, a glass sunroof, folding electric door mirrors, front foglights, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Flagship EX trim keeps all the ES kit except the sunroof; gets back the 17-inch alloys and premium headlight system, and gains voice-controlled satnav and Bluetooth hands-free phone capability.
