Mazda Mx 5 Soft-top Convertible
Review
The Mazda MX-5's place in motoring history has been assured after being recognised by Guinness Book of Records as the world's best selling two-seater sports car. True to the saying £if it ain't broke, don't fix it,£ Mazda has made few changes to the car's successful recipe since the model was launched in 1989. Over the years the original pop-up headlights have been ditched, safety systems have been upgraded, new engines have been introduced and the bodywork has benefited from a few extra characterful curves. But essentially it remains much the same lively rear-wheel drive soft-top two-seater and has sold more than 600,000 examples worldwide. In the UK it has held its own as Mazda's wider market fortunes slipped and achieved a level of public recognition that is greater than that for the Mazda brand itself. Last revised in 2001, the MX-5 is currently offered in four versions: 1.6i, 1.8i, 1.8i Automatic and 1.8i Sport, but special editions are regularly built in limited numbers.

Equipment
The driving character of the MX-5 has long proved a greater attraction to buyers than a host of creature comforts, but in successive re-grooming exercises the car has been fettled with more of the features modern drivers have come to expect. Lowering and raising the hood may be a manual operation, but it's far from difficult £ just a matter of operating a couple of latches. Simplicity like this means there are no sophisticated electrics to go wrong. The 1.6i and 1.8i are simply equipped, but that helps keep the cost competitive. The basic package includes twin airbags, central locking and power steering. The 1.8i Sport adds on leather upholstery and trim, heated seats, alloy wheels, remote central locking and boot release, Nardi sports steering wheel, electrically adjustable door mirrors, electric radio aerial and a sound system with single CD player. Key optional extras include a detachable hardtop, metallic paint, air conditioning and a luggage rack to mount on the boot lid. Even without the rack, the MX-5's carrying capacity is surprisingly good, the boot in particular able to accommodate several soft bags. Mazda provides a dedicated baby seat, but you need to pay extra for a deactivator for the passenger airbag.
