Mercedes R Class Estate Review
Mercedes-Benz sees a sizeable market niche for the R Class, a luxury cross between an MPV and a 4x4. It's a sleek six-seater with strong MB genes and is available as both a standard-wheelbase car and a stretched version, which answers the perennial complaint about a fully loaded MPV: that there is nowhere left for luggage. All except the two front seats can be folded to create more than 2,000 litres of load space. Build is impeccable, but this luxury sports-tourer should carry more kit as standard if it is to justify its high price, even taking the 4x4 capability into account.

There are three R-Class trim levels. Entry trim brings automatic headlights, cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric heated and folding door mirrors, automatic wipers, climate control, eight-speaker sound system, electric windows, electric front seat adjustment, front central armrests with storage, three 12-Volt sockets, multi-function leather-trim steering wheel and trip computer. SE and Sport trim cost the same, but offer two different packages. SE adds metallic paint, 18-inch alloys, air suspension (R500 SE only), leather upholstery, various pieces of chrome exterior trim, auto-dimming interior and driver's-door mirrors (R500 SE only), extra cabin lighting, heated front seats (R500 SE only) and wood trim in the cabin. Sport trim matches most of the SE package, but instead gets 19-inch alloys, sports front seats, metal pedals, aluminium trim on the fascia, and Alcantara upholstery instead of the SE's leather. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on all long-wheelbase models and optional on standard-wheelbase cars.
