Mazda 2: smart new supermini
What is it?
Mazda’s smart new baby. New Mazda 2 consigns its dumpy predecessor’s MPV looks for much sleeker lines and gets the same underpinnings as Ford’s next Fiesta. Engines include a 1.5 petrol, 1.4 diesel and two 1.3 petrols – with 75bhp or 85bhp TS2 model, as tested here.
What's hot?
- It’s really good looking with a sweeping shape…
- …angular headlights and boomerang-style taillights
- Dashboard is just as stylish with some influence from the RX8
- Handling is agile, the ride is taut and there’s loads of grip
- Engine is almost as rapid as the 1.5 and returns 52mpg too
- Aircon, 15-inch alloys and curtain airbags as standard
- Lots of space up front and okay in the back too
What's not?
- Cabin plastics, especially those on the dash, are a bit fragile
- The steering is rather light and lacking in feedback
- Ride can be a bit firm in town
- Could do with more insulation from road and engine noise
- Boot isn’t huge at 250 litres
