History of Mercedes-Benz
From their beginnings in 1886 Mercedes-Benz have built world-renowned cars that have utilised expertly designed engines and technology. That said, the firm did not start car production until 1901; up until that time their major source of income had come from the production of petrol-based engines for stage coaches. From these humble beginnings the company went on to manufacture the world's fastest car at the time. This was the Mercedes-Benz SSK which was released in 1928 and was capable of achieving speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour. The company's next major success was in 1936 with the Mercedes-Benz 260 D, this one vehicle lead to some of the most powerful, elegantly designed and exclusive models of the 1940s and 1950s.
Since that time Mercedes have become synonymous with the forefront of design, technology and safety thus allowing their models to become some of the most eagerly sought after in the world. In fact, the technologies that they have invented have now become standard in all production cars, regardless of manufacturer. These include the internal combustion engine, the honeycomb radiator, the float carburettor, the "drop chassis", 4-wheel braking and crumple areas for enhanced safety in a collision. More recently, Mercedes have developed the ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) which enhances driving experiences and offers greater control of a vehicle; a feature which is also being adopted by other car manufacturers.
Mercedes have now started to explore the use of non-diesel engines and since 2007 have produced several low carbon models. Of these vehicles, the F700 concept car was revealed at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show and as of 2009 the Mercedes-Benz S400 Blue HYBRID and Mercedes-Benz Blue ZERO were both available for purchase. These machines emit just 74 grams of CO2 emissions, making them great for eco-conscious drivers who are in the market for a new Mercedes-Benz.
