How to protect yourself from the cloners and what to do if you become a victim of cloning.
You can only imagine the shock you receive when you pay your road tax and car insurance, and abide by the laws of the road, then one day you get a fine through the post for an offence that you know you did not do. The chances are, your car will have been cloned. Cloning occurs when criminals find an identical car to one that they have stolen and copy the registration plates to make the stolen vehicle look legitimate.
Car cloning can be hard to spot, as the vehicles are identical to the naked eye. So what do you do if you become the victim of vehicle car cloning? First things first, you need to return any correspondence to the issuer along with any proof that you have showing that your car was not involved in whatever it is they believe it was. Contact the DVLA so that they can make a record of the issue for their records.
Report the issue to the police; it is their job to catch the criminals and prosecute them for the offence. In some cases of vehicle cloning, the DVLA will consider issuing a new registration mark with the provision of evidence. You should also notify the police immediately if you find that your number plates have gone missing because the chances are you are about to be cloned.
If you do become the victim of vehicle cloning, an important thing to remember is that the onus is on you to prove that it was not your car and you were not involved in whatever it is you are being accused of. In these cases you need to make sure that you provide as much evidence as possible otherwise you face the difficulty of having to pay for an offence that you did not commit. Don’t back down if you know that you are innocent, it is your right to challenge the fine.
The police and the DVLA are working to prevent car cloning but you can stay a step ahead of the game by securely screwing on your existing plates, making them almost impossible to remove. Alternatively, you could invest in some anti-theft plates that immediately break upon removal making them useless to cloning criminals.
